Understanding human trafficking
What it is, and what it is not.
Human trafficking is a global problem. It involves physical or psychological coercion to exploit another person, often for labor or commercial sex.
Common myths
- It only happens in other countries. It happens everywhere, including in the United States.
- Victims are always taken by force. Coercion is often psychological, built on debt, fear or false promises.
- Rescue is a single dramatic moment. Recovery takes housing, healthcare, legal help and time.
